Have you ever been to Pioneertown, CA? Me neither. We were booked to play Pappy and Harriet’s, a funky barbecue/ concert joint in a town that was built to shoot western movies in. As we drove closer and closer, we saw less and less of the world we know. We were entering an area where rattlesnakes outnumber humans by three to one. They sold snake venom in the convenience store. Flavored.

Everywhere we stepped we sank into inches of dust like we were on the surface of the moon. We will be coughing up dust for days. These must be hearty people who live out here. All seven of them.

Where is the audience coming from? The doesn’t seem to be anyone out here. Are there towns nearby we don’t know about? That NO ONE knows about?

The club turns out to be a stage in the courtyard of the restaurant. We see posters that tell us that either some very cool people have played here before us…..or all these people are wanted by the Pioneertown police.

I do not know where they came from but the place was jammed! I mean…like “sold out ” jammed! Six hundred people. A huge number of them actually had the cd and sang along to the songs. This is a very good sign.

As Steven Stills once sang….“If you can’t be with the one you love…love the one you’re….”
Wait. That’s not the relevant song. Oh yeah.
“There’s something happening here…what it is ain’t exactly clear”

I’m not saying we are close to where we need to be fan-wise but in Pioneertown, CA…..we are gods.
