So we went to Park City and the film festival….to DC and the Inaugural…now we’re in LA. And I’m sick. Not a big surprise. Someone always gets sick on the the road and we still bull right through it. This time was different. This was Leno. We had to be great. I’ve been on Leno before with Ringo and it’s an amazing thrill and I wanted Georgia to feel what that’s like so I can’t be sick. Then on the morning of the show….3AM actually…I woke up and….I was sick. I had no voice. None. I could not get a sound out. Off we go in our rental car to find a 24hr clinic to see if something can be done. I am NOT cancelling Leno. The Doctor checks me out and offers a steroid shot that should take down the swelling and let me sing. “Is the show soon?” he asked. “Tonight” I reply. “Good luck with that” he said sadly. If I do not talk all day…I might, just might…get thru a three and a half minute song. (more…)

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

1.24.13 Showtime. We stand behind the curtain and wait for his introduction. Georgia is calm but excited like the pro she is should be. Kenny has a very satisfied look on his face as if he willed this moment into existence two years ago. The curtain rises. Three and a half minutes later…..we have just [...]

DC – Day 5

Today we were actually treated like rock stars. It was on the American taxpayer…but it was probably money better spent on us than on another nuclear sub. They put us up in the W Hotel, a beautiful hotel right in front of the Washington Monument. Wanna feel patriotic? Stare out your window at one of [...]

That and a great 9 inch pizza from room service will do it, baby! (more…)

Glamour Life: Day 4

Do you know how you sometimes think how cool it would be to be the President? Then you find out that being the President is a lot of talking to people you don’t want to and posing for pictures and stuff that sucks? How about a baseball player? All glamorous, right? Then you find out [...]

Then you find out that being the President is a lot of talking to people you don’t want to and posing for pictures and stuff that sucks? How about a baseball player? All glamorous, right? Then you find out they have to play when it’s 110 dgrees out and be constantly worried about being cut or sent down to the minors. How about playing in a band? That’s exciting and glamorous for shizzle! Well, my little acolytes, let me tell you about last night. I will have the rock band fantasy in one font and our reality in the other. (more…)

Seattle stays dark till noon. Well it certainly seems that way. We woke up at 6 (we are such rock stars) and headed to a radio station to do an on air performance and interview. It went as well as could be expected considering we were still sound asleep. They kind of concentrated on Kenny (a little humbling for Georgia and myself, but we can’t enjoy the pluses of being in a band with a famous guy and not be willing to live with the minuses). A lot of these shows only know how to advertise it as “Kenny Loggins with”….cause no one knows who we are yet. Still, I wish they could at least get the name right and call us Blue Sky Riders and not The Blue Sky Riders. Oh well. (more…)

Promo Day 2 – Seattle

Woke up at 5 to fly to Seattle to play for the corporate office of Amazon. Couldn’t find the place at first. We were driving up and down this funky street looking for the address. No number. Maybe it’s a virtual office and we are just playing a virtual performance?

The ‘Mouse Out of the Hole’ Theory

The optimist in me believes that if you do what you love and just work hard enough, success will follow. But the realist in me knows I’d be leaving out a big piece of the equation: LUCK. Being in the right place at the right time. I want with all my heart to believe that every talented person will have his or her day in the sun, but unfortunately, that’s not always the case. I’ve been in Nashville for twenty years and I’ve seen singers and writers far more talented than I leave town because they just couldn’t get a break. Did they leave too soon? There’s a saying in twelve-step groups: “Don’t quit five minutes before the miracle happens.” But what if you’ve given it years and the miracle just hasn’t happened? Do you keep your life on hold for the elusive “you MAY be the next big thing…” Or do you go have a quality life doing something else? (more…)
