I moved to Nashville in 1992 to pursue a career in songwriting. As a young girl, I was told I had a talent for singing so that’s what I did. I sang at fairs and clubs and wherever they would have me. I liked the attention I got. I was a shy, average looking girl who had self-confidence issues but when I sang, I felt special. And that was nice for a little kid. I even got paid $75 once to carry a guitar and accompany myself around a mall at the age of thirteen. But as I got older, I wasn’t sure that’s what I wanted to do with my life. I think a lot of that had to do with how badly my parents wanted it for me and to this day, I fly in the other direction when something feels expected of me. Singing wasn’t mine; it was theirs. I’m back from the wars. My dog remembers me. It took a little bit of time and treats but he is back growling at me… his funny way of saying he loves me but knows that I am made of meat and therefore fully edible. That crazy pup!

I have three weeks of newspapers to catch up on. Who knows what kind of shenanigans Beetle Bailey got into while I was away. By now he could be deployed to Afghanistan. If any one could make that funny it would be that dead guy who writes it. (more…)

Imagine a field large enough to hold 100,000 people. OK, not a field… a gigantic parking lot… like Sears times 10. Add 100 degrees in the sun. Oh… and there is almost NO shade!

Now put 50 people in lawn chairs scattered almost randomly around the front of the lot towards the stage, and let the rest of that immense parking lot be empty. Mojave Desert empty. Empty like a concrete soccer stadium with a handful of popcorn salesmen wandering around aimlessly, as if rehearsing for when there actually might be fans there some day. Maybe. (more…)
