I have a songwriter friend who has a wicked sense of humor and every time I give him a compliment, he says to me “It’s a gift. I don’t like to talk about it much.” Makes me laugh every time.

I am on the bus with Kenny and the band and can’t sleep a wink. It’s 7:26 a.m. and since I’ve finally come to the resolution that sleeping just isn’t gonna happen for me today, I decided to stop having false hope and go ahead and get up. If I can’t sleep, I might as well blog about what’s going on in my head right now. (more…)

I moved to Nashville in 1992 to pursue a career in songwriting. As a young girl, I was told I had a talent for singing so that’s what I did. I sang at fairs and clubs and wherever they would have me. I liked the attention I got. I was a shy, average looking girl who had self-confidence issues but when I sang, I felt special. And that was nice for a little kid. I even got paid $75 once to carry a guitar and accompany myself around a mall at the age of thirteen. But as I got older, I wasn’t sure that’s what I wanted to do with my life. I think a lot of that had to do with how badly my parents wanted it for me and to this day, I fly in the other direction when something feels expected of me. Singing wasn’t mine; it was theirs. But I do remember the day it became mine. (more…)

Okay. So, we’re on the road with Kenny for the first time. Let me try to explain what this is like:

Old days:
Drive 300 miles to hotel, check in then run over to the venue for a soundcheck. Park my car as close as I can to the front and grab my guitar, gig bag, stand and box of CDs for sale. Juggle everything in my hands so I can make as few trips as possible. (more…)

I just got the sweetest phone call from a friend.  He said he had just read Gary’s blog and wanted to know “Was Gary kidding?” ‘Cause if he wasn’t, my friend said he would officially drive to Nashville to kick some serious ASS.
