I sang The National Anthem when I was 12 years old at the NBA San Antonio Spurs games. I had no fear. I had sung it about five times and it went so well that they asked me to come back and sing it at the opening season game. It would be nationally televised. I’ll never forget the moment the announcer said, “Would you please stand and join Georgia Middleman in singing ‘The National Anthem.'” The cameras were on and thousands of people stood up and put their hands over their heart. 9.16.12 I know I can technically take the night off from blogging because we did not have a show tonight…. but we were not lazy bones either. Established bands could take the day and relax by the pool sipping an alcoholic beverage. Not us. We woke up early, got on a plane (a private jet weaseled from a friend, so take off points for not having to get anally probes by TSA)… flew to Atlanta and sang our single “Feeling Brave,” the National Anthem AND Take Me Out To The Ball Game!!! 9.15.12 Third show of the tour. We played in a great big barn. It was a fundraiser for a charity that helps needy and/or disabled kids ride horses, hence the barn. It looked like we were going to play over cutlery clinking and people talking so we were prepared. These kind of gigs are always a little dispiriting because we are sometimes nothing but background music for them. We finished songs and heard polite applause… I told jokes that echoed into the darkness and died awful deaths… or so we thought. (more…)
